This Week's Comics - 11/30/11

Been awhile since I posted anything (I blame the holidays) and I even missed a week of comics (that Turkey was so needy.) Fortunately last week was pretty light; I'll be sure to pick up Wolverine and the X-Men #2 and any other Marvel I missed (sorry Aquaman.)

Now let's forget the past and live in the moment. Today's lunch break pull list is a good one.

Preview: Wolverine & The X-Men #2

Looks like Jason Aaron is making another attempt to boost the legitimacy and competence of Bobby Drake AKA Iceman. Generally I've never enjoyed these attempts (Bobby roadtripping with Rogue, being tutored by Storm, taunted by Emma Frost, or as a mainstay of Mike Carey's Messiah Complex Rogue Team, etc.) but I might get behind this one, since if I'm being told that Wolverine believes in him, guess I instinctively do too.

Although I have to admit I love Rick Remender's take on an Evil, Age of Apocalypse Bobby Drake in recent Uncanny X-Force issues. The things he does with his powers there are fantastic. I expect more Bobby-tutoring-Idie in Wolverine & The X-Men rather than Bobby making an army of himself, but still, Aaron's debut issue on the title was promising. So long as there's a lot of Kitty and Rachel I'll be content. Check out the preview pages for #2:

Occupy Delusion

In lieu of the throngs of Occupy Wall Street protesters disrupting my commute and lunch breaks (unacceptable) I thought I'd make a related post. But to be completely honest, I can't think about it let alone write about the recent events without seeing red (and not in a nice Ma Vie En Rose kinda way.) So, here's some nice fictional Occupy ideas that have popped up around the Internet in the past two months.

 I would like some Occupy Narnia graphics please. I mean, Aslan's super bossy, and human children get castles and riches just for being Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve, while the poor badger family has to struggle for their daily existence? Not just classism, but speciesism. Definitely worth checking out The Magician King, by Lev Grossman, which is basically modern disaffected Brooklyn teenagers living and ruling over a Narnia-like alternate world. Very fun novel.

This Week's Comics - 11/16/11

The adventure in truncated pull lists continue. As opposed to writing about, say, Occupy Wall Street, the rise of "Occupy Lung" disease, the eviction of the occupiers, and the reactions to Frank Miller's Occupy Wall Street reaction, I just feel like talking about new comics coming out tomorrow.

Once again, a Marvel heavy week, though the few DC books I still pick up are included.

Uncanny X-Force Teasers

The end of the Dark Angel Saga is nigh. Archangel/Apocalypse has seemingly slaughtered most of the team, and all that stands between him and world destruction is Fantomex and a recently cured Betsy Braddock.

The final issue in this arc, #18, comes out on 12/7/11.

More Joss Whedon on Much Ado About Nothing

There's a new interview with Joss Whedon about his homemade version of Much Ado About Nothing. It's written by a 15year-old online magazine editor in chief named Tavi. She has an awesome name, and deserves some major kudos for doing what she does at 15, but she also says "Like" a lot and talks about herself too much. On one hand, annoying, on the other, kind of the perfect interviewer for Joss.

There was also a picture of Fran Kranz, but it was in color and I don't love him so I stuck to the handsome, much-fan-adored leads.

Already, from the few pictures released, one can tell the film will be rather visually stunning. And knowing how great Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof are, especially together, I might just have to crash a movie festival this Spring.

Daredevil #6 Preview

The glorious thrill-ride continues. Beautiful, fun, and exciting, Daredevil is a comic you need to buy, and worth posting a preview even if it's an unlettered one.

Tony Stark's Future Board and Marvel Point One

In anticipation of Marvel's big 12-month-story-set-up, which is apparently what tomorrows special "Point One" issue will be, and because enough time has passed since Avengers #5 came out, I thought it would be good to take a new look at future Tony Stark's Big Board of the Future!

Due to the overlapping nature of the Marvel Universe's current timeline (certain books take longer to come out, such as Avengers: Children's Crusade vs. X-Men Schism) we are not currently located in one spot. However, a bunch of ground has been covered. We've done Five Lights (Hope,) Who is Worthy? (Fear Itself, possibly Night Falls (also Fear Itself? or FI fallout?), Return of the King (Black Bolt), Schism, and we are in the middle of such events as Iron Lad Returns/Where is Wanda? (Children's Crusade) and All Hope Lies In Doom/Galactus Seed (Hickman's big FF story.)

So, what's left? And what's been missed?

This Week's Comics - 11/9/11

The efforts to be financially mature continue, but, as you'll see in the following Pull List for this week, I'm including on the list certain titles I would probably buy if I were rich.

Mostly, as per usual, my list is predominantly Marvel and X-Men based. Except of course for Buffy.

X-Men Regenesis: Things To Come

Now that both Wolverine and the X-Men #1 and Uncanny X-Men #1 have been released, we've been given a taste of the new status quo as well as two double-page teasers of things to come.

Phoenix and Hope hang out, Namor and Emma get busy, and Brood/N'Garai return, among other things

Shi'ar Death Squad return (Rachel Grey grudge match please?), Cyclops stops by, Kitty gets sick and more Brood/N'garai fun.

The Winter Soldier Returns

Recent teasers from Marvel reveal that Ed Brubaker will be revisiting his deservedly acclaimed Winter Soldier arc, in which he told the story of Bucky Barnes from his apparent death in World War II to his present resurgence in the Marvel Universe.

Of course, Bucky was fairly brutally murdered by Sin, early in Fear Itself. So while at first it seemed he was getting either a speedy resurrection or an arc telling stories from his Winter Solider past, looking at an even older teaser made it seem that Brubaker would be writing an ongoing about an entirely new Winter Soldier.

Turns out, none of these theories are true. Hit the jump for spoilers.

This Week's Comics

A series of decisions have been made by me, Captain Elias, to mobilize this "growing up" process I hear so much about. Do not mistake me; in no way do I intend to admit that buying, reading, collecting, discussing, and generally enjoying superhero comics is in any way a childish pursuit (nonsense.) Rather, the motivation for aforementioned decisions is primarily financial.

It's long past time to admit that most comics cost far too much, and that I have an unfortunately self-destructive tendency to disregard dollar signs and weekly pick up comics that I know either don't truly appeal to me or aren't written/drawn that well.

Thus Captain Elias, king of a small floating world, becomes his own purser and transforms himself into a responsible, budget-following adult. Well, up to a point.
